The Coalition of Women for Peace is a feminist organization against the occupation of Palestine and for a just peace. Founded in November 2000, after the outbreak of the Second Intifada, CWP today is a leading voice in the Israeli peace movement, bringing together women from a wide variety of identities and groups. CWP is committed to ending the occupation and creating a more just society, while enhancing women’s inclusion and participation in the public discourse. CWP initiates public campaigns and education and outreach programs, working to develop and integrate a feminist discourse on all levels of society.
Among the major campaigns CWP has initiated in recent years: A campaign to end the siege of Gaza, mass demonstrations against the Second Lebanon War and against the Israeli assault on Gaza, a coalition of 20 women’s organizations protesting sexual violence by Israeli officials in the government and military, and local and international campaigns demanding accountability for war crimes committed by Israel.
CWP supports, empowers and assists human rights activists and organizations, particularly women’s and youth groups. Every year, CWP organizes a variety of capacity-building workshops and seminars for peace activists, including media outreach, planning and organizing public campaigns, internet campaigning, and legal counseling for activists. CWP also aids independent and new peace and social justice initiatives by providing organizational and fundraising assistance, thereby creating meaningful partnerships and solidarity networks.
In 2010 CWP’s opened an activity center, which is available for use by activists and groups and hosts a wide range of meetings and activities. The activity center holds lectures and courses for the general public on issues that are at the focus of our work, such as feminism and gender, social activism, culture and politics, international law, and economic justice.
CWP also leads international campaigns for peace and justice, in cooperation with human rights organizations and women’s movements around the world. For example, CWP has initiated an appeal to the British government, signed by 100 organizations around the world, to not limit universal jurisdiction for war crimes; and CWP’s cooperation with Norwegian civil society organizations has led to the largest European public pension fund’s divestment from companies that are involved in the occupation.
Alongside the ongoing public campaigning and advocacy, CWP operates two long-term projects:
“Who Profits from the Occupation” is a research project that provides a unique and comprehensive online database of international and Israeli companies that directly profit from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the Syrian Golan Heights. The project, launched in 2007, serves as a central and reliable resource regarding corporate and economic involvement in the occupation, and responds to the needs of international and Israeli campaigns and human rights organizations working on corporate accountability and labor rights.
